SYNOPSIS

Maxime, a young man in his mid-20s, works in a mine far from the city. He spends 14 days at the mine and 14 days at home. When he is at home in Val-d’Or, he shares his time with his girlfriend and his childhood friend Julien. Julien is disabled after a car accident caused by Maxime two years earlier. Consumed with guilt, Maxime seeks to redeem himself. But he is hampered by Mario, Julien’s father, who also works at the mine and still blames him. One day, an explosion occurs in the mine. As part of the rescue mission, Maxime goes underground, determined to save his friends and colleagues and bring them out alive.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Sophie Dupuis is a Quebecker film director and screenwriter, from Val-d’Or, who studied at Concordia University and the Université du Québec à Montréal. She is one of the major figures in the new generation of Quebecker filmmakers that emerged from 2000 onwards. She has directed several short fiction films which have won awards at festivals in Quebec and elsewhere.

 

Her feature film debut, 'Family First' ('Chien de garde') premiered in 2018 and was selected as Canada’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards. The film was nominated for eight Prix Iris at the 2nd Prix Iris, including a Best Director nomination. Prior to 'Family First' she directed the short films 'J’viendrais t’chercher,' 'Si tu savais Rosalie', 'Félix et Malou', 'Faillir' and 'L’hiver et la violence'.
